Emergency Funds Are More Important Than Savings

I always hear about how important it is to have savings! Which it is, I am in no way saying never have a savings. <That would be crazy. I do believe Emergency Funds are more  important than savings. I will even use a personal example:

We had our savings slowly building and it felt amazing, I seriously was more happy and positive when we had that savings. Suddenly life happened and our truck broke down, in the end it was going to cost us almost $1000, there went our savings. I know some of you are probably thinking a grand isn’t very much but we had just started saving and at the time it felt like a million dollars. I felt so defeated and honestly didn’t want to try and save again, I was thinking why bother when something else unexpected will pop up and take it.

Once we decided to have an Emergency Fund everything changed, I felt more secure and happy. I watched my savings grow and no longer had to worry about using it for something life decided to throw at us. Most experts suggest having at least 3 months worth of funds ahead, which to me is a lot of cash! That would be like $4000 for us, at the time I was lucky to have an extra $500 to put away. So that’s what I started with!

3 Ways To Get Your Emergency Funds Fast

1. Sell Some Stuff

Go through your belongings and sell off anything you don’t need. This can potentially bring in more than enough to get your emergency fund started.

2. Offer To Clean

Offer to clean houses! Ask your friends and family, you will be surprised at how many would actually love to have you clean their house.
A) They already know you and probably wouldn’t want a stranger cleaning their house
B) Most people don’t have the time.
I cleaned my grandfathers entire house for $150. It helped him out immensely and also helped me.

3. Use Your Talents

Find something you are good at and offer it as a service.

  • Are you a good writer? Offer to write blog posts for people.
  • Good at photography? Take some photos and sell them. Offer to take family photos for someone you know.
  • Love kids? Babysit some kids, parents love to have some nights to themselves for a couple hours.
  • Creative? Create something and sell it online. Knitting, house signs, decorative items, organizing items.
  • Love to bake? Bake some sweets and sell them online! I love buying peanut butter balls from a lady in my town who I found on our local buy and sell.

Even with just one of these you should be able to have enough to at least start your Emergency Fund. Always add to it, the more you have in there the better.
